Veterinary Technician – Cardiology
Position Overview:
The Veterinary Technician supports the cardiology team in providing exceptional care to our patients with cardiovascular conditions while delivering exemplary service to our clients. This specialty service job role provides specialized veterinary care to patients by conducting and assisting with cardiology-specific diagnostic procedures, and monitoring patients during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures while facilitating daily oversight of the duties outlined below.
Essential Position Functions:
- Assess cardiology patients by conducting exams, reviewing medical history and diagnostic results, holter monitoring, completing cardiovascular-specific diagnostic imaging – such as echocardiograms and ECGs, and assisting with advanced cardiology diagnostics.
- Provide patient care, including obtaining vital signs, monitoring heart rates and rhythms, administering medications, preparing and assisting in cardiac procedures, and providing specialized nursing care for cardiology patients.
- Assist in cardiology procedures by preparing necessary instruments and supplies, positioning patients, operating specialized cardiovascular monitoring equipment, and providing restraint as needed.
- Ensure accurate administration and documentation of cardiovascular medications, with a focus on specific drugs used in managing cardiac conditions.
- Observe patients for signs of cardiovascular distress, arrhythmias, and other cardiac-related symptoms; report changes promptly to the veterinarian.
- Prepare, sanitize, and maintain all cardiology equipment and ensure proper storage and maintenance of supplies necessary for cardiology procedures.
- Maintain thorough and accurate patient medical records, documenting cardiovascular status, procedural details, medications administered, and any changes in the patient’s condition.
- Communicate effectively with pet owners about cardiac care plans, providing updates as directed by the cardiologist and addressing questions regarding cardiology treatments and follow-up care.
- Contribute to a safe, secure, and sanitary work environment by following all protocols for handling cardiovascular patients and equipment sterilization.
- Support inventory management specific to cardiology, ordering supplies and maintaining records of specialized cardiovascular medications and equipment.
- Engage in continued education on cardiology advancements and specialized care techniques for cardiac patients.
Core Role Requirements:
- Proficiency in cardiology-related diagnostics, including ECG monitoring, echocardiograms, and blood pressure measurement.
- Advanced knowledge and proficiency in anesthesia monitoring and managing sedated and potentially high-risk patients under supervision.
- Confidence and compassion in caring for all patients, displaying professionalism in high-stress situations.
- Comfortable with flexible scheduling, including some weekends and/or holidays, to meet the needs of the hospital.
- Physical ability to handle and restrain animals, perform lifting, and engage in activities requiring movement and strength.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- One to 3 years of experience working as a veterinary technician within cardiology specialty service strongly preferred.
- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT) preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and experience in other specialty veterinary fields will be considered.
