Veterinary Assistant – Cardiology
Position Overview:
The Veterinary Assistant supports the Cardiology team in providing exceptional care to our patients with cardiovascular conditions while delivering exemplary service to our clients. This specialty service job role works under supervision of our Cardiologist and Veterinary Technicians, providing assistance to the team by completing the day-to-day duties outlined below.
Essential Position Functions:
- Contribute to clinical cleanliness of the hospital environment by following protocols in place to uphold hospital standards aligning a safe, secure, and sanitary environment.
- Communicating with clients to provide updates on the patient’s status as directed by the technician or veterinarian, and ensuring all owner questions are relayed accurately and appropriately.
- Assist the cardiology team in assessing cardiology patients by gathering basic information, obtaining patient history, preparing patients for exams, and assisting in cardiology-specific diagnostic procedures.
- Support patient care by recording vital signs, monitoring heart rates, and assisting in the preparation and administration of medications – as directed.
- Help prepare examination and procedure rooms, set up equipment for diagnostic imaging, such as echocardiograms and ECGs, and assist with positioning and restraining patients during procedures.
- Aid in the administration and documentation of cardiovascular medications, following protocols for specific cardiac drugs as directed by the cardiology technician or veterinarian.
- Observe patients for signs of cardiovascular distress or symptoms, promptly reporting changes to the technician or veterinarian.
- Support inventory management by completing weekly department stock list to maintain levels of cardiology-specific supplies and medications, ensuring in-stock availability for daily operations.
Core Role Requirements:
- Basic understanding of veterinary patient care and handling, especially for cardiology patients.
- Ability to assist with monitoring equipment, handle patients with care, and demonstrate proper restraint techniques.
- Capacity to work with animals experiencing stress or illness, especially those with cardiac conditions.
- Professional demeanor, flexibility, and teamwork in a specialty environment.
- Physical stamina to assist with patient care, including lifting, restraining, and standing for extended periods.
- Flexibility with scheduling, including availability for some weekends and holidays as needed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- One or more years’ experience in veterinary environment performing duties of a veterinary assistant strongly preferred.
- Experience in veterinary cardiology or specialty field is a plus.
- May consider an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
